Matt Walrath

Matt blazed the long and difficult trail from a short and skinny kid who rode the bench in every sport to an All-American Lacrosse player with opportunities to play professionally. CrossFit and nutrition were key pieces of this transformation.

Matt discovered CrossFit back in 2006 and earned his CrossFit Level-1 a few years later. This led him to start studying nutrition after it helped him personally have the energy to excel in both college athletics and academics.

He is currently based out of Paradiso CrossFit in Los Angeles, CA and has helped everyone from athletes preparing for the CrossFit Games to overworked CEOs and startup founders achieve their goals through a mix of intelligent training, optimal nutrition, and taking a look at biomarkers to uncover hidden stressors contributing to their state of poor health.

He uses a unique approach to fitness that focuses on realistic and sustainable lifestyle changes based on good science.

You can find more from Matt on the Practical Nutrition Coaching blog, where he simplifies advanced nutrition and movement concepts to deliver bite-sized information and actions that you can take to reach your goals in record time.

My nutrition journey started when I was 18 years old when I was told I have extremely high cholesterol and needed to start watching what I was eating. Although I wasn’t over weight, the high cholesterol was genetic, but something I could control with my diet since I was so young. At the time I lived off of chicken fingers, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and pretzels. I was a very picky eater and the only vegetable I would ever go near was a carrot.

After being told my cholesterol was almost 300, I decided to start reading up on low cholesterol diets to see how I could lower my cholesterol. I decided to go full vegan where I was forced to eat vegetables I wouldn’t even go near in the past. Becoming a vegan and dealing with high cholesterol at such a young age opened up my eyes to a whole new healthier lifestyle.

During this process of changing my eating habits, I was entering college where I decided to take a level one Nutrition course to see if maybe this was the path that I was going to want to follow. I immediately drew a great interest in my nutrition course and decided at that moment to declare my major and I never looked back.

Growing up I wasn’t the most athletic or even a coordinated kid. I tried out just about every sport until my parents realized sports just weren’t going to be my thing. I did do gymnastics, but it was more of just a social hour for me and because my big sister did it.

I was eventually convinced in high school to give pole vaulting a try since I had gymnastics experience and some upper body strength. This was the true beginning of my passion for fitness. My pole vaulting coach saw my potential and took me under his wing. He had me in the weight room bench pressing 95#, training me throughout the season, which lead to me setting the indoor school record my junior year.

Unfortunately I couldn’t follow my passion for pole vaulting in college and was forced to find a new way to lift weights and exercise. I started studying bodybuilding and different forms of exercise. I studied to become a personal trainer and obtained my NASM certification in 2012. Through the course of studying different training modalities I came to find CrossFit.

I immediately fell in love with CrossFit because it was something I was good at, it was almost as if I was born to lift heavy weights. In just a few months of starting CrossFit I was squatting 200#. I started to set goals for myself, one of them being to make it to the games. This has been and is still a major goal of mine.

After a year into CrossFit I decided I wanted to share my passion with others and begin coaching. I obtained my CrossFit Level 1 in 2014 and started coaching at a gym near my college soon after. Through coaching over the past two years my passion for wanting to help others live a healthier lifestyle has grown tremendously.

Through both CrossFit coaching and Nutrition coaching I am able to spread my love for living a healthy lifestyle. I love helping others set goals for themselves to follow down a path to a healthier lifestyle.

I played sports and was very active my whole life, but never learned anything about nutrition or training in a gym.  After college, one of my friends started a Crossfit gym in his garage, and around the same time my aunt decided to run a marathon.  I was a naive 21-year-old and signed up for my first marathon with only three months to train and no prior running experience.  Those two things, Crossfit and marathon training, would eventually lead to my first fitness seminar with Crossfit Endurance.  I fell down the rabbit hole of nutrition and fitness, became a personal trainer shortly after and have been working with clients ever since.

Half of my family, like most families in America, are struggling with food, weight, and body issues to this day.  When I was young my mother lost 90lbs in 9 months on the Jenny Craig diet.  While it was a “success”, she has yo-yo’d and struggled with food ever since, never solving the emotional need it carries with it.  This has been a major catalyst in my life to find the “right” way to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.  My ultimate mission is to improve the quality of life of as many people as possible by improving the health and fitness of my community.  So much stress, physical and emotional, can be overcome and avoided with simple daily habits!

I am fascinated by the human mind and body, and over the past year have completed 400 hours of training to become a Massage Therapist.  It has been an amazing journey working hands on with the human body, and it has really shown me that everything in our lives truly is connected and matters.  Our mindset, workouts, sleep, hydration, and nutrition affect everything we do.  I am ecstatic to be working with clients through Beyond Macros and be able to make a positive change in such a huge component of our lives!

Being an athlete, I have learned over the years how important food was in relation to performance.  This wasn’t an easy route and took much trial and error.  In high school I didn’t have the best nutrition.  I used to eat only a soft pretzel with mustard and a chocolate milk for lunch everyday.  This led me to feeling tired and rundown, not to mention having no strength because I was skinny with no muscle. I eventually learned that if I wanted to continue to play sports that something had to change.  I started reading fitness magazines which had a lot of sample eating plans.  They also taught me how to lift weights so I could build some muscle.  This was the ‘spark’ I needed that began my fitness and nutrition journey.

After I reached college I had enrolled in nutrition classes to study more on the subject.  I continued to study about health and fitness and eventually graduated with a degree in Exercise Physiology.  In 2001, I became certified through ACE as a Personal Trainer.  Since teaching my clients about eating the right way was central for them to succeed, I wanted a soundproof nutrition certification to go along with my degree.   After much research, I eventually found Precision Nutrition.

I can not think of my life without having sports and fitness be a major part. Weight training and nutrition both helped me to stay healthy and compete at a high level.  I was fortunate enough to play college basketball all 4 years and even be on the starting team as a freshman.  After  I graduated I still had a desire to be competitive in some way.  That is when I found the Women’s Professional Football League.  For 3 years I was given the opportunity to play tackle football at a professional level for the Cleveland Fusion.  Eventually I discovered Crossfit which has changed the world of fitness.  This way of training has enabled me to feel like an athlete again and have working out be fun again.

Being a Crossfit coach and working with Beyond Macros has given me so many opportunities. My journey has enabled me to continue to share my passion about fitness and nutrition.  I am grateful to able to educate people about a healthy lifestyle through eating, and train them for everyday life through functional exercise.
